If your internet connection drops, a properly configured VoIP phone system can automatically divert incoming calls to a mobile number or another line, so you don’t simply stop receiving calls until the internet comes back.
How Failover Actually Works
This is called call failover, and it’s one of the most important things to have set up correctly when moving to a cloud-based phone system. Rather than calls simply failing to connect, your system can be configured to detect an outage and redirect calls to a backup number, commonly a mobile phone, so your business stays reachable.
We can also set up lost call alert emails, so if a call genuinely can’t be connected for any reason, you get notified and can follow up rather than a customer simply giving up and calling someone else.
Why This Matters
An internet outage is stressful enough without also worrying about missed business. For customer-facing businesses especially, even a short gap in phone availability can mean lost enquiries. Having a failover plan in place means an outage becomes a minor inconvenience rather than a business risk.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to do anything manually when the internet goes down?
No, once failover is configured, the redirect happens automatically. You don’t need to log in or make changes during an actual outage.
Will customers notice a difference?
Generally no, calls are simply redirected to ring through to the backup number, so from the customer’s side it just rings and connects as normal.
Is failover set up automatically, or do I need to ask for it?
It’s something we configure as part of your setup, but it’s worth confirming with us specifically to make sure it matches how you’d want calls handled during an outage.
